Statement of Need: Clinicians need to stay informed about the most up-to-date findings concerning all forms of contraception. Clinicians involved in reproductive health care should understand clinical research methods, their advantages, and limitations. They also should be knowledgeable about randomized controlled data concerning pregnancy and discontinuation rates for the sponge and diaphragm, as well as the effect of combination hormonal contraceptives on body weight. Educational Goal: The broad mission of the Editorial Board for The Contraception Report is to develop patient education and professional communication materials that address the benefits and risks of contraceptives, as well as other reproductive health-related issues, in a scientifically balanced manner. 1. State what type of information is revealed by the p value; 2. Describe the differences between p values and relative risks (or odds ratios) with confidence intervals; 3. Identify the effect of combination oral contraceptives and the combined transdermal birth control patch on body weight; 4. Identify the effect of the combination vaginal ring on body weight; and, 5. Name the side effect reported more often by sponge users compared with diaphragm users in randomized controlled trials.
